Once a year, the entire IBA faculty submits nominations for the Student Spotlight. We are please to announce that the faculty-chosen student for March 2018’s Spotlight is Sophia Brown. As one teacher commented, “Sophia has a natural grace to her dancing, and does more than just “going through the motions” in class. She’s a joy to watch and takes corrections well.”
Sophia began her study of dance at the age of 3 at Lake Erie Ballet and later studied at the Patterson School of Ballet, where she studied under Michael Patterson. Upon moving to Greenville with her family, she enrolled at International Ballet Academy and has trained under Vlada Kysselova, Lena Forster, Victoria Yanchuck, Alexander Tressor, Liz Blackwood, Jordan Craig, Juliana Jordan and Alyson Amato (Contemporary), and Naina Dewan (Modern). She is a Trainee with the International Ballet company. She has performed in International Ballet’s The Nutcracker as Clara (School Show), Cupid, Party Girl, Polichinelle, and Soldier; in IB’s L’Automne in “Manu” from La Bayadere and in Alexander Tressor’s Four Seasonings “Winter”; and in Storytime Ballet at the Greenville County Library as Tallulah in Tallulah’s Toe Shoes, as Clara in Clara’s Nutcracker Journey, and as a villager in Coppélia. She also performed with IBA’s Studio Performance Group in its productions of Swan Lake and Coppélia. Look for Sophia in International Ballet’s Coppélia at the Peace Center’s Gunter Theatre April 14-15, in which she will dance in the “Children’s Dance” and as a young villager.
Sophia has attended International Ballet Academy’s Summer Intensive, and she was also accepted to the Summer Intensive at the Kirov Academy of Ballet. She plans to attend the Summer Workshop at the Chautauqua Institute in 2018. She will be inducted into the IBA Junior Chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts in May. She was also featured in IBA’s Student Spotlight in September of 2016 as "One to Watch."
Sophia has volunteered as a part of St. Peter’s Service Week (Charlotte, NC) and at Greenville’s Artisphere. She is a 7th grade Honor Roll student at Riverside Middle School and the daughter of Steve and Michelle Brown of Greer.
