The IBA Career & College Guidance Program is pleased to feature Julian Finley in its Student Spotlight for April, 2017. This month's student was chosen by the Guidance Director. Julian was chosen for having the courage to start ballet at a relatively late age (15), and sticking with it. He will graduate in May and will attend the University of South Carolina.
Julian began his study of dance at the Decatur School of Ballet, where he studied tap, and then he continued at Upstate Carolina Dance Center. He began studying ballet at the age of 15, training at International Ballet Academy under Vlada Kysselova, Victoria Yanchuck, Lena Forster, Juliana Jordan, Liz Blackwood, and Alexander Tressor. He has trained with Juliana Jordan in contemporary, Naina Dewan in modern, and Gordon Owens in jazz and musical theatre. He has also taken tap and jazz classes with the Greer Children’s Theatre and numerous master classes and private lessons in dance and acting with professionals in the field. He has danced with International Ballet in mainstage and community performances, including in Storytime Ballet at the Greenville County Library, at Senior Action of Greenville, and at Greenville’s Artisphere. He performed with International Ballet Academy’s Studio Performance Group before being invited to join the International Ballet Junior Company for 2016-2017.
Julian's roles/ repertoire with International Ballet include Arabian, Toy Soldier, Big Mouse, Party Dad, and Party Boy in International Ballet's The Nutcracker; Alexander Tressor's "Spa de Quatre", The Big, Bad Wolf from The Sleeping Beauty; and a Peasant in Giselle. He also performed in IB's Storytime Ballet in Clara's Nutcracker Journey (Drosselmeyer, Mouse King), Tallulah's Tutu (Shopper), Ella Bella Ballerina and the Sleeping Beauty (Prince), and Tallulah's Solo (Director). Julian also performed with International Ballet Academy’s Studio Performance Group in group versions of The Sleeping Beauty (King, Blue Bird), Don Quixote (Basilio), Giselle (Hilarion), and Cinderella (Prince). He appeared in the South Carolina Children’s Theatre's Snow White & the Prince as a featured dancer, and he danced in Carolina Dance Conservatory's Snow White (Prince Charming, Huntsman). Roles with the Greer Children's Theatre include Pied Piper and Dancer in Shrek and Flute in Tarzan.
Julian has attended International Ballet’s Summer Intensive and has participated in Camp Broadway and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival. He is represented by professional modeling, commercial TV, and film agencies; is a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts; and he plays the cello. He is homeschooled and the son of Jerry and Tracy Finley of Fountain Inn. Look for Julian in International Ballet's upcoming Swan Lake Act III & Other Works April 21-22 at the Peace Center's Gunter Theatre.
