The IBA Director of Career & College Guidance recently interviewed Grace Sargent. Grace was selected by the IBA faculty to be featured in IBA's March, 2017 Student Spotlight.
IBA: Congratulations, Grace, on being featured in IBA's Student Spotlight for March. How long have you been dancing, and how long have you been a student at International Ballet Academy?
GS: Thank you! I have been dancing for 7 ½ years, and I have been at IBA for 2 ½ years.
IBA: How old are you?
GS: I’m 10 years old.
IBA: You were chosen to be featured in this month’s Student Spotlight by the IBA faculty. What was your reaction when you heard about this, and what would you like to say to your teachers?
GS: I was so excited, I did a little squeal! I want to thank my teachers for picking me. They have taught me so much already, and I can’t wait to learn more!
IBA: What do you like to do when you are not dancing?
GS: I love to draw and read.
IBA: What is your favorite subject in school?
GS: I love social studies because I like learning about history.
IBA: What do you like to eat?
GS: Macaroni and cheese...any kind!! Homemade, from the box-- I just LOVE macaroni cheese!
IBA: There are other dance schools in the Greenville area. What made you pick IBA?
GS: We chose IBA because our friends Maya and Eliza Hyatt go here, and we heard great things about it.
IBA: Who is your biggest role model?
GS: I look up to Maya Hyatt [International Ballet Senior Company dancer] because she encourages me in ballet. One summer, she even came over to my house and taught me stretches and techniques to help keep me flexible. She is a great dancer, but she is also a good Christian, and I want to be just like that!
IBA: If you could dance any role in any ballet, what would it be and why?
GS: I want to be Clara in The Nutcracker. Ms. Naina always called me "Clara" in Ballet I, and it made me laugh! I think it would be so fun to dance that part.
IBA: Just for fun, complete this sentence. "Ballet would be better without _____________."
GS: Oooo...that’s hard! There isn’t much about ballet I don’t like, but if I have to pick something, I would say, “Ballet would be better without days off!!!” I want to be in class every single day of the week!
IBA: Finally, Grace, what do you want to be when you grow up?
GS: I want to go to New York and dance in the New York City Ballet!
IBA: Thank you, Grace. Again, congratulations and best of luck to you. We look forward to watching you train and perform at IBA.
