The IBA Career & College Guidance Program Director recently interviewed Sophia Brown, who is featured in our Student Spotlight for September, 2016. The IBA directors selected Sophia as One to Watch in 2016-2017.
IBA: Congratulations, Sophia, on being featured in IBA's Student Spotlight for September. How long have you been dancing, and how long have you been a student at International Ballet Academy?
SB: This is my eighth year dancing and the start of my second year at IBA.
IBA: You moved with your family here to Greenville last year. There are several dance schools in the Greater Greenville area. How did you find out about IBA, and what made you select the academy as your dance school?
SB. We researched online and visited different ballet schools in the area. But after we visited IBA, we knew it was right for us.
IBA: How do you manage to be an honor roll student while dancing several days per week?
SB: I have to balance my time between ballet and school, but I am learning to keep my focus and not wait until the last minute to get my school work done.
IBA: What have been your best moments as a dancer?
SB: My best moments have been dancing in The Nutcracker. It has always been special to me, and this will be my eighth year dancing in it with a live orchestra. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity.
IBA: You will be performing this year with IBA’s Studio Performance Group and in International Ballet’s The Nutcracker with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. Tell us about your upcoming roles.
SB: In The Nutcracker, I will be performing as a Party Girl and Cupid. As a member of SPG, I will be dancing in the Village Mazurka and as a Scottish Doll in Coppelia.
IBA: You were chosen by the IBA directors as One to Watch for 2016-2017. What went through your mind when you received this news?
SB: Quite honestly, I was very surprised and honored to have been chosen.
IBA: Who are the biggest influences in your life?
SB: My sister, Gabby Brown, has always influenced me to try my best. She inspires me to work hard every day, and someday I want to be just like her.
IBA: What do like to do when you are not dancing or studying?
SB: I like to read, swim, and play with my dog.
IBA: Just for fun, complete this sentence. "Ballet would be better without _____________."
SB: Ballet would be better without blisters.
IBA: What advice do you have for younger ballet students?
SB: To stay focused, have fun, and believe in yourself.
IBA: Finally, Sophia, do you have any goals or plans for the future in regard to dance that you want to share with us?
SB: I would love to go to college and major in dance and, hopefully, be asked to join a professional company someday.
IBA: Thank you, Sophia. Again, congratulations and best of luck to you. We certainly look forward to watching you train and perform this year.
